Students will use images and themes identified from the graphic novel, “The Arrival,” by Shaun Tan as a basis for choreographic creation. Students will use a variety of tools to analyze the structure of the narrative, including grid studies, comparison and contrast, and repetition. They will then employ the elements of dance (body, action, space, time, energy) along with various choreographic tools (isolation, accumulation, unison, etc.) to embody these ideas in a movement phrase. Nada Sousou Hula Tribute

Nada Sousou Hula Tribute

"Nada Sousou," a popular Japanese song, was honored by a Hawaiian artist, Kealii Reiche, who translated it into Hawaiian and choreographed a Hula dance for it. During AAPI month, the Dance and Japanese classes will collaborate to learn about this song's journey across cultures, the history of Hula, and how to translate words not only to different languages, but also into movement.
